Kidnap Scams

The Bait:
The victim would receive calls that his loved ones had been kidnapped. He would be asked to make a transfer of money via a remittance in order to free their loved one.

Kidnap scams have hit Malaysia before and have made a comeback, apparently run by Chinese nationals according to the Police source. The 'kidnappers' only ever speak Mandarin, as do their victims who are all Chinese. In one day the families of three girls from the same school were targeted. However nobody has actually been kidnapped, it's a cruel hoax.

The Catch:
Callers will normally threaten to harm the supposed victim, if money is not paid up. Sometimes, calls of help can be heard in the background.

Victim's may be asked to place the ransom at specific location for collection by kidnapper.

Your Safety Net:

Royal Malaysian Police Crime Prevention Section advised that if members of the public receive such calls, they should contact their loved one immediately. If their loved on is un-contactable, they should call the police. The people who received such calls must discuss with other family member if any and try to contact the so called 'kidnapped' victim before proceed to next course of action. They should also pose questions to the 'kidnapper' to verify the identity of the supposed victim.
